Shai Hills offers dramatic views and interesting wildlife, is located less than an hour from Accra. This 51-square-kilometre natural gem consists of broad savannah surrounding forested hills that reach up to 200 meters above the plains. The reserve is home to 31 species of mammals, 175 species of birds (checklist available) and hundreds of butterfly species.

Among the mammals are western kob, grey duiker, bushbuck, serval, olive baboon, green monkey and lesser spot-nosed monkey. The waters harbour crocodiles and tomb bats inhabit some of the caves. The preserve is managed by the Wildlife Division of the Ghana Forestry Commission.

When To Visit

The rainy season beginning around April brings lush vegetation and a profusion of wildflowers, peaking in April through June. Butterflies are most abundant May through September. Migrant birds pass through the preserve during the Harmattan (November through February). Early morning or late afternoon is the best time to see wildlife.

What To Do

A 17 km gravel circuit road passes through the savannah below the hills. The activities listed below are accessible from the circuit road in your private vehicle. Some attractions can be reached on foot. The modest guide fee is paid on an hourly basis.

Hieweyu Hill offers the highest overlook and the trail passes briefly through Obutim Cave. Time: 1 hour. Difficulty:

Sayu Bat Cave was once home to some of the Shai people (evicted by British colonialists in 1892) who lived in this area. The cave still has a stone defense-wall created by the Shai. A much deeper portion of the cave is home to a large bat colony not visible to visitors.

The Baboon Trail makes passes into the hills from near the southern entrance gate. Time: 2 hours. Difficulty:
