For generations the adjacent villages of Boabeng and Fiema have believed that the monkeys in their midst are sacred and have protected them. A forest sanctuary was created between the two communities to protect the roughly 500 Campbell’s Mona monkeys and 200 Geoffroy’s Pied Columbus monkeys living there. Visitors can usually have excellent views of both species in the forest at any time of day and hear their exotic vocalizations. The mature forest with some massive specimens is also beautiful.
The sanctuary also features a pleasant guesthouse and visitor centre and a new community internet facility and post office is being constructed immediately across the street.
When To Visit
Monkeys can generally be seen any time of day in the forest, but if you visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon you may also see the more gregarious and impish Mona monkeys scampering about the village looking for food to snatch from kitchens or cooking pots.
