Located 21 km from Elubo in the southwest corner of Ghana, the Ankasa Conservation Area is an extraordinary bio reserve. Comprising 509 square kilometres of the Nini-Suhien National Park and Ankasa Resource Reserve, the park is the only intact wet evergreen high forest ecosystem remaining in Ghana. It has the highest plant diversity known in the country (600 plant species have been recorded in a single hectare), as well as the nation’s highest rainfall (1700-2000 mm per year). It has a very high global conservation rating due to its size, diversity of plants and wildlife, and relatively undisturbed condition. These attributes have resulted in significant financial support from the international community.
Relatively few tourist facilities currently exist beyond a basic visitor centre shelter, a few trails and a rustic chalet, but more are planned. In the meantime, those who are willing to rough it can experience an extraordinarily wild and rugged place. Over 800 vascular plant species have been identified, including several new discoveries yet to be named. Mammals include forest elephant, forest buffalo, leopard, bongo and nine species of primates but the chance of seeing them is very rare. More than 600 butterfly species have been identified, as well as over 190 bird species.
When To Visit
While rain is possible anytime, it is most persistent during the two rainy seasons of April through June and August through September. Raingear is highly recommended.
